TerryDunneParticipant
Good suggestion Julian, thanks.
TerryDunneParticipantMOC 1000 9.90%
MOC 2000 5.75%
MR 2000 3.20%
MOC Short (0.81%)
Momentum 18.08%
Total 7.35%I’ve given up on finding another Momentum system, at least for now. However, I did find a significant improvement to one of my MOC systems that greatly increased the allocation to that system, so I spread some of the extra funds across the current systems and tipped some of the extra funds I had set aside for the other Momentum system into the enhanced system.
I also found a coding glitch (i.e. a transposition error on my part) in the same system, which means I’ve left some profit behind that I really should have had. This has led to do a full review of all of the ‘live’ systems against ‘testing’, which I’m still doing. This is a typical psychological error for me, and not just in trading, of not concentrating on the details.
Perhaps trading is as much about growing as a person as it about making money?
I hope everybody had a great February and has a great March as well!
TerryDunneParticipantFurther to this…I’m still considering changing some of the parameters of my MOC short systems in an attempt to make them less ‘volatile’, even though they went live from the beginning of January. So far, no luck…
TerryDunneParticipantFWIW, what I do when I find a new idea is test it on my current systems.
If the improvement is small, I tend to not mess with things. If there is a really significant improvement, I’m more inclined to create a new system using that idea than tinker with an existing one that has met all of the criteria I had set beforehand. Having said that, I stopped trading two systems that only just met my criteria because of an idea that turned into two new systems that were a lot better.
The exception to this is when I first launch a system – real life can sometimes be different from back testing and I am willing to modify the system in its first few months if I’m uncomfortable with how it operates IRL.
TerryDunneParticipantOuch, Alexander! You’ve done well to keep your sang froid.
There were a lot of stocks at that time, as well as FOSL and FIZZ, but I think(hope) it might have been a unique event.
I’ve decided to just keep trucking on the shorts, with some trepidation…you give me hope
TerryDunneParticipantGood on you Michael!
Your experiences make me think of that Mike Tyson (well known trading philosopher) quote
“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”
It sounds as if you’ve been punched in the mouth, but you’re still standing!
It’s happened to me as well, which is why I focus on defence.
TerryDunneParticipantHi Nick,
‘Explainable’ is a great way of looking at it! Well, at least it lets me keep trading…
And your point about being a known known makes really good sense.
So I just need to keep trundling, acknowledging that what we are doing is not risk free.
Thanks,
Terry
TerryDunneParticipantMOC R1000 6.84%
MOC R2000 5.26%
MR R2000 9.10%
MOC Short R3000 9.19%
Momentum R2000 4.70%I launched two MOC short systems and a rotational momentum system this month and I’m very happy with how they’ve gone I had more than my fair share of luck this month – even my errors and system issues had positive results. I’m not expecting that sort of thing to continue, so I really need to tighten up my processes and invest in a VPN.
I’m still trying to come up with another trend following system for the final 10% of my portfolio, but I haven’t found anything that’s right for me as yet…I’ll just keep churning away and eventually something will work (hopefully).
TerryDunneParticipantGood luck with the new systems!
TerryDunneParticipantHi Julian,
I haven’t, but it sounds like I should. I’ve seen posts here but didn’t pay that much attention as at the time I saw them I was in system development mode.
Would you mind explaining briefly how it works? For instance, if there is a power blackout after I’ve gone to bed, what happens?
Terry
TerryDunneParticipantYes I get what you’re saying, and even if that happens I’ll still be able to trade the next day and all of the days after that…
TerryDunneParticipantNow I’m torn…I’m set to short it at $188.30.
I don’t like to make arbitrary calls like this – it seems to defeat the whole purpose of all the time spent backtesting.
BUT
I’m also paranoid about a stock I short going to the moon…aagghh!!!
Nope, I’m not going to potentially bet so much of my stake on heads…order cancelled!
TerryDunneParticipantThanks for the information Julian, that probably saves me a lot of pointless work.
BTW, I’m at 3.40pm. I suppose there is no logic to changing that – as you say, the later the cutoff, the more in line with the backtesting it will be, and that’s what I’ve spent so much time on!!
3.05 is a unique time though…
Best wishes,
Terry
TerryDunneParticipantAll good, no worries mate.
TerryDunneParticipantHi Scott,
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I was using ‘SHORT”, but Nick put me right!
