Impressive!
TimothyStricklandMemberWow, nice! I am finding that building my system is much more difficult now that I have to apply everything I learned then just learning small pieces of info. The learning curve is real!
How long did it take you to get through your first system?
TimothyStricklandMemberThanks Nick, I have noticed the HFT still being flat lately, When we talked a bit you mentioned some of the mean reversion strategies were not doing as well due to no volatility. Is that true for HFT as well?
TimothyStricklandMemberWow Julian that is quite the amount of strategies going on there. Are all those live or are you still testing some?
TimothyStricklandMemberThe fact that the US Aggressive is outperforming the Forex Discretionary and there is very little input makes it very attractive. The discretionary strategy is very labor intensive. Working on my first system this weekend, hope to have some productive testing.
My trading knowledge has grown by at least 2x since starting the trading course. There are so many aspects of trading I did not learn from the other course that I took and it was 5x the price.
My first course never talked about backtesting, forward testing, drawdown, next 1000 trades. In fact, some of the things that were taught there is you just need to test your strategy on 20-30 trades!!! That’s exactly what Nick says not to do!
Oddly enough, I went to a conference Thursday where members of the course gathered, there were over 200 people there. I talked to many of them and I couldn’t find anyone who was profitable. Some were still on the sim (paper trading) for over 2-5 years!!!! After i casually mentioned my results a few times I started to draw a crowd and folks were asking me how I did it. One person had been trading for 12 years and another for 30 and still wasn’t profitable. This was very sad as it only took me a year, but luckily I found Nick shortly after I started trading. It seems like many are still stuck in the beginner’s cycle and focused on a few trades. One student I spoke with was going on and on about 1 trade that didn’t work, and I told her to not focus on that one trade, but the next 1000 trades, got a blank stare. I directed a couple of people here, but we will see if they follow through.
TimothyStricklandMemberUS Aggressive +8.78%
Forex Discretionary: +5.8%
US Original: +0.85%
TimothyStricklandMemberThanks for the informative read Travis, read through the entire journal, Nick suggested it. I am building my first system and it will be a momentum based system and I came away with some tips from your journal!
I have a lot of good ideas with multiple systems and aggressive, conservative systems but I gotta build my first one to start. Will be based similar to Nick’s US Aggressive strategy.
TimothyStricklandMemberBasically finished the course tonight and I am now starting to work on my first system with Nick and Craig’s help. Just finished watching the CMT video on momentum. Ideas I’d like to try first:
First system I want to be a trend following system, due to profitability and the added benefit of the ease of coding.
Second system might be around Mean Reversion which will probably take a little longer according to Nick, because of the extra added technical complexity of coding such a system. This system I want to offset some of the drawdown of the trend following system and to add a little bit of diversity.
If those 2 go well, then I may look into possibly working on a system with forex but that is a long way off.
TimothyStricklandMemberTrading – US Aggressive: +4.5%
Course: Module 24, call with Nick on Sunday to discuss first system setup.
TimothyStricklandMemberMy biggest with futures was always the risk involved. It seems incredibly difficult to increase your risk incrementally in futures because the contracts are leveraged so highly, that is one of the reasons I moved to Forex and Stocks. Maybe Nick knows a way around that?
TimothyStricklandMemberDepends on the system but I would expect significantly less signals than one could get using stocks. I have traded Futures before and it has an immensely smaller universe to choose from and if you limit yourself to one market then also a lot less trades. The other big problem to focusing on 1 market is the lack of robustness that Nick talks about. Futures also adds the additional complexity of contract expiration dates, I would think this would be challenging to code, not impossible but definitely not in the scope of the course. US Markets (at least) are also highly leveraged at 50:1. Unless you have a sizable account the risk % could quite possibly be very large, this does vary depending on the contract, for instance you could trade a futures currency pair like the Mexican Peso which has lower risk then say then say Crude Oil, both because of the contract size and the volatility. That’s my 2 cents at least.
TimothyStricklandMemberEntire portfolio performance after switching to the US Aggressive.
On module 20 and ready to start building my first system with Nick and Craig!
TimothyStricklandMemberThe cost of the course was a non issue for me. I had been with the chartist for a couple of years now and watched my account grow and the numbers always matched or nearly matched what Nick was posting. Once I was able to trust Nick and the team, I was sending him emails so I could get in the course even before I was at the 100,000 trading capital mark!
I have dropped a lot of money on courses in the past and none of them so far has taught me as much as I have already learned here. Regret is that I didn’t find Nick sooner.
I have a couple of friends who are interested in trading and when I told them about the chartist (They know I dropped money on other courses), they do not want to put up the money to learn, they want me to teach them for free (haha). I respect my time to much for that. Even after I have said how good this program is to the guys who I thought I was pretty close too, they still won’t do it. Not sure why but it boggles my mind.
The most frustrating part is I even showed them http://www.tradelongterm.com and told them that the US aggressive strategy on average makes 30% per year and that the mentor course would teach them how to make a system like that or one that is even better. I give up at this point, some people will, some people won’t. That’s ok, I will make money without them, I just hope they don’t come crying in 10 years after the compound interest has allowed me to live the life that I want.
TimothyStricklandMemberThanks for sharing Glen, those are some impressive results on all fronts actually. I’m surprised you got so good returns in 2008 taking no short positions but I’m not done with the course yet either.
I am not sure I’d be willing to stomach a <+25% drawdown just yet so I'd have to take smaller position sizes with that strategy. It is nice to see what a system can be capable of.
TimothyStricklandMemberWeekly update:
Trading:
Systems are still trending slightly higher through the week. I thought we were going to fully in the green on Friday but then the market quickly pivoted and gave back some of the gains.
Course:
Just finished Module 13, made some mistakes as Craig pointed out and just need to send out of my last looping task. It was challenging but not incredibly difficult. I think I’m going to get a big eye opener though when I try and put all the code together in a system and try to make it work, that’s the true test!
