TimothyStricklandParticipant
Matthew, something to keep in mind is that my MRV system is currently in a 28% drawdown so it has taken a beating the last several months, yesterday was simply a nice reprieve where the system worked very nicely. That is why I mentioned things could change tomorrow, the system just happened to get on the right side this time, today it could be a different picture.
TimothyStricklandParticipantSimilar to what Julian just said except my stretch is 0.4 ATR which is a little tighter than Julian’s but still not tiny. Typically on a day like yesterday I would not have been filled on many of my stocks but I got a fill on all of them and then of course the big rally towards the end of the day. a couple of the big winners actually got filled the day prior.
For instance, my system got into ORLY about half way ish of the big red candle of the previous day and then of course yesterday’s candle.
TimothyStricklandParticipantFirst monster day in awhile. It was nice to see all my systems knocking it out of the park, my MRV in particular really shined. Nice to not be beaten into the ground for a change = P. Being realistic it could change tomorrow, I just put my trades and walk away.
TimothyStricklandParticipantlol Julian!
Scott, it won’t help much but I happen to be the proud owner of MKTX, it isn’t quite as bad but its close. Fortunately the other stocks in my MRV made up for most of the losses so I am back to break even today assuming I get out of MKTX after a small recovery on the open.
TimothyStricklandParticipantMy MRV has been down all year, it looked like it was recovering but then took more losses the last 2 days. One can never predict when it will get its edge back Len. My MRV is currently in a 26% drawdown, well over my tolerance for drawdowns of 20% and worse than all my backtests dating all the way back to 1994.
I think this is the biggest and most important reason why we have multiple systems. There will be periods of time when some systems just don’t perform for awhile, sometimes a LONG while, maybe several years while other systems knock it out of the park. One of goals for the new year is to design at least 2 more systems to I can mitigate this type of risk. I think I was too heavily put into my MRV and momentum, probably should have been spread out over 4-5 systems. Oh well, live and learn.
TimothyStricklandParticipantsort of the same here Len, actually the market went up quite a bit the last 2 days and I still somehow managed to lose money haha! I can’t complain though because there have been days where the market went down and I still made money so….
TimothyStricklandParticipantI remember Nick’s words that i keep in my head every day. “One man’s pain today, is another’s tomorrow”. I read the posts and see several of Nick’s students doing well while me and a few others are struggling. Next year it will be a different picture, if I made another system and switched to it, my new system would likely go down right away while the others that I abandoned would start making a comeback.
TimothyStricklandParticipantYes, I really loved your write up there Nick, it really helped me diagnose my own systems from a big picture and just like you point out earlier, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with them, its just the way the chips fell this time around.
TimothyStricklandParticipantWow, good job!
TimothyStricklandParticipantIn the same boat Daniel, I haven’t had a good month since March-April
TimothyStricklandParticipantNice results on the WTT!
TimothyStricklandParticipantinteresting
TimothyStricklandParticipantLen, you mentioned you were not trading US MR because equity curve 200MA? Which index are you using, I didn’t think any of them had dropped below the 200 MA, at least according to Amibroker.
TimothyStricklandParticipantYea, watching things is typically bad. I used to watch my MR HFT when I first started, now I sometimes forget to even check it until its time to place the trades.
TimothyStricklandParticipantYea, its the 1 minute Futures discretionary system. very small budget but chugging along nicely. its a scalping strategy so the edge is the large amount of trades it takes to produce a positive expectancy.
