TimothyStricklandMemberKate, I agree that it is really hard to try and say everything in a simple forum post but I think I see what you are getting at. Some of the best traders have some serious drawdowns, in some cases, so large that most people simply cannot stomach.
I also have followed drawdowns on some of the greats. Warren Buffet for instance had drawdowns of around 51%, how many people could stomach such a loss and keep plugging away, not many I would guess.
TimothyStricklandMemberEveryone is a guru these days, just look at youtube. Except no one can provide any data or rationale on why they do things.
I have heard similar stories Kate. A friend of mine retired and decided he was going to make it big day trading watching youtube guru’s. Well as it turns out, that was 4 years ago, he lost 700k and is now working again and believes the market is out to get people and is rigged.
Another close friend messaged me last year about day trading and we talked. He was just picking trades on gut feelings. I warned him this is probably not a good idea unless he had tested his strategy etc. He didn’t believe me and thought I was just being a kill joy. He lost his entire retirement savings this year. There are many more I have heard in my years of trading. Everyone wants to make a quick buck but no one wants to put in the work required.
TimothyStricklandMemberThe mental part of trading is still probably the hardest part, sitting on your hands and letting the system run its course.
TimothyStricklandMemberKate,
I think most of us had similar drawdowns during those months you just mentioned, I actually had to turn a system off because it ended up being too volatile.
If my MRV was still running, it would have had a 14.2% month, but unfortunately I am looking for less volatility now because I have far more capital at risk now then I did when I started. I was ok at the beginning with huge swings in profits and drawdowns with a small account but things change. I designed 3 systems all very aggressive. Working on having a mix now so the total account doesn’t swing so wildly.
TimothyStricklandMemberAs of yesterday, I have finished all my college classes for my Degree in Computer Science, a road a I started many years ago. Now that I am finished I can devote more of my time to trading and strategies. I will be taking a long vacation but when I get back I’d like to work with Nick and Craig to get my MOC and new MRV setup.
My NDX Momentum system is live again today and looks like it is invested in mostly energy and big pharma companies, I didn’t see a single tech company in there understandably.
TimothyStricklandMemberNice on both MOC’s Terry
TimothyStricklandMemberWow on the HFT Nick
TimothyStricklandMemberWasn’t planning on getting back in this month but the Fed ruined that lol. Yay to the slowing of interest rates I guess.
TimothyStricklandMemberHaven’t posted in awhile. No changes to strategies.
Both August and September were 0% since all strategies are still in cash. Good news on other fronts. 2 of our properties are looking to be sold which should generate a hefty profit. -
