Luckily I had backed up all my mentor work and trading systems on the amibroker on the vps(also all my systems on Hotmail) continue to trade on the vps without a hitch.
That’s great Len. I wish they could have fixed the problem but they just couldn’t. Still no idea why it didn’t work for me. Just bad luck I guess. it is a computer after all and they will always bite you in the arse when you least expect it, as you just found out
May 2, 2017 at 9:02 pm #105694Nick RadgeKeymasterWell, for the last 3 sessions my VPS dropped out and shut everything down. I told Hostwinds it needed to be rectified or it was a deal breaker. An interesting response from them:
Quote:It would appear that your server has had a large number of Failed login attempts, each login attempt will use CPU, RAM and Networking, when too much CPU, RAM, and Networking are used, the server will try to sacrifice other connections to accommodate the new one. When a large number of requests hit a server, whether malicious or not, it may be considered to be a DOS or DDOS brute forcing attack. They may be trying to bring down the server or they may be trying to access the server.
We do offer Windshield, which may help to mitigate the effects of these types of attacks by changing a few RDP Settings.
Do you want us to add Windshield( a 1 Time service for $25.00)? https://www.hostwinds.com/windshield.phpI have no idea what these login attempts would be?
May 2, 2017 at 9:24 pm #106746JulianCohenParticipantI still haven’t had a problem since switching to Speedy. My server has been up and running constantly from the day I switched to now.
If you have to add another $25 bucks it will be nearly the same price…..
May 2, 2017 at 10:12 pm #106749Nick RadgeKeymastermy reading of that $25 was it was a one-off, not monthly
May 3, 2017 at 12:56 am #106750TrentRothallParticipantThat’s weird, i haven’t had any issues. Although i logged in mid trading session the other day and TWS was logging back in liike it does when connection is lost to the internet.
May 3, 2017 at 9:12 am #106747ScottMcNabParticipantIs the implication Nick that the logins are deliberate in order to either crash your VPS and cause you financial loss(once the api no longer active) or even worse to get into your TWS somehow ? Very disturbing. Would it be worth asking them to allocate you a different VPS ? What are the chances of it happening randomly again ! Might be the simplest fix.
May 3, 2017 at 10:29 am #106756Nick RadgeKeymasterI’m not sure its specifically going for TWS or the API. If anything they’re trying to get into the server for whatever reason. No different to a usual hack. That said they’re only guessing. I bought the added security for $25 which they installed today. See if that helps…if not I’ll be following Julian across to speedy servers.
May 22, 2017 at 3:05 am #106757TrentRothallParticipantAnyone else’s VPS down this morning when they looked?
May 22, 2017 at 3:46 am #106938JulianCohenParticipantNo mate. Mine (Speedy) is operational
May 22, 2017 at 3:52 am #106939Nick RadgeKeymasterHostwinds is fine.

Seems the same thing happened to me Nick, Something attempted 39,000 times to log in over a 14h period… Wow
May 22, 2017 at 7:20 am #106940Nick RadgeKeymasterHasn’t occurred since I bought that extra Windshield thingy for $25.
May 23, 2017 at 9:23 am #106941ScottMcNabParticipantHow can you tell Trent ? Is there a function that logs attempted log-ins ?
May 23, 2017 at 9:35 am #106952TrentRothallParticipantit showed up in the error logs, hotwinds pointed it out to me. I think you can view some info in the server manager thing
May 23, 2017 at 9:15 pm #106953Nick RadgeKeymasterServer attacks are quite common.
We had a recent experience where someone tried to test several thousand credit cards using our trial membership. They came through every 2 seconds for hours on end.
They had no interest in the $19, they just wanted to find which credit cards allowed the payment o go through so they could them use them for what they wanted.
