I’m going to be doing a lot of traveling in the next months and would like to start using a VPS.
Anyone currently using one?
September 8, 2016 at 7:26 am #105130SaidBitarMemberThe forum has a nice new look now
Regarding vps I was looking for some providers recently I wanted it just for tws and the api.
Most of the companies are providing much more than what I want and thus the prices are high.
According to IB the minimum requirements for tws are 2Gb ram and 2 coresI was checking with

I am interested if you found any good optionSeptember 8, 2016 at 5:41 pm #105144SaidBitarMemberthere is another option that we use at work from time to time that is amazon cloud
we use it for a totally different purposes but maybe it is helpful
September 8, 2016 at 9:00 pm #105149Nick RadgeKeymasterThanks Said.
I spent the day yesterday researching and decided on Hostwinds with a 2GB Windows 12 R2 server which is US$21 a month. Some in the Chartist community are using the 1G with TWS but they’re running a single BatchTrader and I need to run two. The 1GB is US$13 a month.
I can upgrade to 3GB with ease.
There is a trader dedicated VPS server, https://www.speedytradingservers.com, which is co-located with the CME so speed is very quick and they only cater for traders so very much aware of what is needed. Their VPS already comes loaded with TWS and other platforms. US$80 a month for this one.
I loaded everything on with ease. It was a little slow but I’ told that others experienced it being a little slow for the first 48-hours.
I loaded one BatchTrader without issue but the other seems to have snagged somewhere so that’s my job today. Will run the ASX system on the VPS today to see how it goes.
September 8, 2016 at 9:52 pm #105151LeeDanelloParticipantI’m curious to know how these things work when one is travelling.
September 8, 2016 at 10:22 pm #105152Nick RadgeKeymasterIt’s basically a remote computer. So I have all my software –TWS, Amibroker etc and spreadsheets — all installed on the VPS. I can log in from my own laptop (which I will be taking) or can login from any other computer.
It allows me to run the systems using BatchTrader without having my own computer on. So once I place the orders I shut down the VPS and BatchTrader and TWS do their thing.
September 9, 2016 at 8:28 am #105153AnonymousInactiveI was also looking at options and found a few that are trader dedicated, but didn’t think it offered much more benefit than going with another VPS provider, I guess speed is the main advantage. I eventually found a South African company and because I was unsure what I was looking for it made it easy to pick up the phone and speak to someone who was quite helpful in guiding me to what I needed / was looking for. http://www.vps.co.za
2.60Ghz processor, 3GB RAM on a Windows server and I pay the equivalent of US$30 pm.
I have been using it for 3 weeks and all running fine.
I have TWS and and 2 BatchTraders running on it. I haven’t loaded Amibroker as yet. I run what I have to on my local machine and save the csv files into my google drive and then use that to import the files into the BatchTraders.Makes me feel a lot more comfortable knowing that I don’t have to rely on my local ISP to be up 24/7 or during US trading times at a minimum.
September 13, 2016 at 12:03 am #105131ScottMcNabParticipantSome are running Amibroker and premium data on the VPS providers server and others are uploading excel file to VPS it seems. Is it necessary to purchase another version of amibroker and/or subscription to premium data to run it on the VPS as well as home computer ? Also wondering how hard it would be to upload the excel files each morning for ASX and each night for US ? Final question please…few statements in regards to sluggish speeds…would the SSD windows option (vs windows VPS) improve this or is the sluggishness more likely due to connection ?
Thanks in advance for any helpSeptember 13, 2016 at 1:11 am #105132ScottMcNabParticipantAnother newbie question sorry…if using the VPS when travelling should I also be using a VPN ?
ThanksSeptember 13, 2016 at 1:18 am #105185Nick RadgeKeymasterI intend to, yes.

Thanks in advance for any helpCopying excel from your machine to the vps can be as easy as copy paste
For amibroker and data I think they will work with the same subscription but still I believe there is no need to have them on vps unless you are planning to travel without your laptop then it makes sense otherwise just copy the csv file from one place to another.
Ssd is good especially when you have operations that requires reading and writing to the disk but for running tws and the api it doesn’t really matters
This is what I thinkSeptember 13, 2016 at 7:57 am #105186TrentRothallParticipantSeems like a no brainer really, even for short trips. Maybe a necessity if you want to trade with a API while your away. I’m considering it for my not so reliable internet connection (just connected to the satellite NBN, see how it goes), plus my laptop has a few bugs at the moment..
A good ace up the sleeve anyway
September 13, 2016 at 8:11 am #105187Nick RadgeKeymasterI loaded both AmiBroker & Premium Data onto the GPS. Both with fine.
I found the browser speed excruciatingly slow though and that concerns me with regards to API – TWS talking.
Also I’m having issues with the new MOC API – it simply won’t start even though the setup is exactly the same as on my laptop. Anyway, ironing them out.
Good news sv that their support is very good

even at the lowest tier 1 hostwinds say they have transfer speeds of 100 mbps… assuming we have fast connections to them perhaps they are not telling the whole story regards bandwidth/transfer speed…September 13, 2016 at 10:13 am #105191SaidBitarMemberTransfer speed can mean many things and not necessary internet speed.
for internet speed you can check the speed by simply using http://www.speedtest.net from it it will give you approximate figures of the reality.
transfer speed also means the speed required to transfer data from and to the remote server. if you are copying files from one server or your pc to the remote server.
regarding the slow browsing maybe it is setting in the windows that is needed to be changed. Normally online servers are not used for internet browsing and this is why by default with windows server internet browsing is blocked and should be enabled manually.i believe speed test will help also ping will give exact figure of the latency / time required to reach the destination
