Still no action in my Momentum system so I’m still 100% cash: invested in SHY (1-3 year US Treasuries). Account is up 1.35% since going to cash so it’s nice to still see some growth in the account. Patiently waiting for the next entry signal.

NDX Aggressive: -.1%
NDX Standard: -.4%
S&P 500 Momo: +4.5%Re-entered momentum systems in March. As a side note, during the 4 months I was in SHY (instead of cash), I generated +1.4% return.

Can you elaborate on your position in SHY?
Thanks!
April 1, 2019 at 6:21 am #109893JulianCohenParticipantMichael if you scroll up a bit you’ll see a discussion about putting funds into cash fund/bond fund when the rotational system goes to cash. SHY is 3 yr Treasury Bond ETF

Overall, most of my holdings have been doing well but I’ve had some big earnings hits on a few stocks that have kept the portfolio mostly sideways. I’m sill extremely pleased with the system. Recently I deleted the app I was using to check stock prices on my phone. I literally had no idea how my performance was until I ran the system last night and looked at how things were going. I’ve decided to stick to the long term strategies only and remove myself from the daily noise completely.

Thanks for this.
I’ve made the same decision regarding sticking to long term strategies and think I will need to make a few interventions to stop myself watching the market. Good to see

NDX Aggressive: -10.6%
NDX Standard: +3.4%
S&P 500 Momo: +3.8%Overall, not a great year for my equity momentum systems. The NDX aggressive had a few poor performers and it’s so concentrated, just didn’t overcome those losers. I’ve only been putting my system performance for my individual stocks on here, but I’m going to post my other systematic strategies that I trade that use ETF’s. Most of my primary retirement account is in the NDX Standard system while I have a smaller account trading the NDX Aggressive (about 10% of the overall NDX allocation).
My wife’s retirement accounts had a very nice year using momentum with asset class ETF’s. The systems are similar to those described in Meb Faber’s Ivy Portfolio (his white paper on tactical allocation from 2007 is a must read as well). The primary system (Ivy5) uses relative strength and a trend filter to select the top performing ETF of the following: VTI, EFA, GLD, VNQ, TLT. It’s a monthly system that tends to do very well in years that the equity system struggles. I also trade a leveraged version (TriplePP) using UPRO, TMF, UGLD in a much smaller account. Here’s the performance for these systems:
Ivy 5: +17.9%
Triple PP: +29.1%The above systems are about 25% of our portfolio. The remainder is in trend following CTAs, market neutral options strategies, and the largest portion is in commercial and residential real estate. Overall it was a good year and my equity systems did their job and got defensive. This year that turned out to be costly, but at some point it will be the right move. I’ll take some underperformance now to prevent against major losses in a bear market. Hope everyone has a great 2020!
January 3, 2020 at 10:04 pm #110737Nick RadgeKeymasterThanks Travis and happy New Year to you and your family.
Is your options strategy managed or do you do it yourself? I used to do a lot of options many years ago and really should try and get back into it, but when I start it’s a struggle to go through all the data etc.
All the best
