Day 02.
I debated yesterday whether it would make sense to have a journal this early on. Ultimately I decided yes, and thought it would be good to capture some of my thoughts along way to be able to look back and see how things have progressed and changed.
Right now I’m working through the coding section of the course and I’ve already learnt more about AmiBroker in 1 day than I had on my own previously. (Kudos Nick and Craig!)
I’m finding some friction in my want to be active in my trading vs wanting a simple, low maintenance approach.
Momentum seems to be the flavour of the moment but it’s something I’m drawn to after reading ‘Stocks on the Move’ and ‘Duel Momentum’. I probably need a little bit of mean reversion therapy after being smacked in the face a few years back so we’ll see if MR comes into the mix.
First 1-2-1 calls with Nick and Craig booked and excited to continue the course

it is always good to start the journal
regarding “I’m finding some friction in my want to be active in my trading vs wanting a simple, low maintenance approach.” It does not have to be either or you can have both they work beautiful with each other, and in days like these where all the long term systems are off you will not feel bad that you are missing the early moves in the market because the MRV will be involved.
January 15, 2019 at 10:31 am #109536MichaelRodwellMemberHey Said,
Thanks for that, it’s certainly something to think about down the track. Have you personally been drawn to one style or the other? Or find it easier to trade one or the other.
My major consideration is time and availability.
In the past my wife has been available to execute trades if I’m on a plane (happens a fair bit these days) but with two young kids it might be a bit more of an ask…
January 15, 2019 at 1:27 pm #109538JulianCohenParticipantI have executed trades on a plane before. You can send trades up through the API to IB, but you can’t use TWS because you can’t get an SMS access code. So running an MOC mean reversion system can be done on a plane, as you don’t need to close any trades.
As for leaning one way or the other, a few of us here lean both ways…Momentum and MR

Yep – staying impartial right now until I get through the coding.January 16, 2019 at 6:05 am #109543MichaelRodwellMemberFirst call with Craig today to get acquainted and go through a few coding questions.
So far so good. I can definitely see there would be benefit to doing some coding every day even if its a small amount or reviewing well writing AFL. Called it a day at the beginning of the Entries section and picked up a little reading which has led me to an idea to investigate – very cool.
January 19, 2019 at 9:43 am #109540AnonymousInactivethis was why I turned off the app login and just went back to card! I guess not as secure but caught out overseas with the phone not working!
January 20, 2019 at 6:41 am #109549Nick RadgeKeymasterPhone app should work anywhere.
January 21, 2019 at 1:23 am #109550MichaelRodwellMemberDay 08.
Looping code! Whoa… It’s starting to sink in.
I went through the looping section 3 times and can now can follow along.I particularly enjoyed plotting the buy/sell arrows and stoploss.
It’s nice to be able to see a visual representation of what the code is doing.Trying to remain focused on the coding at the moment but have
been listening to a few podcasts while repping out deadlifts and
squats at the gym. One of which was with Jerry Parker who
spent 50% of the time explaining in various ways why you should
just follow the system.Very simple, not always easy.
January 24, 2019 at 4:21 am #109551MichaelRodwellMemberBoom! Got the all clear from Craig to progress past the looping section.
I definitely couldn’t write the code from scratch but it all makes sense.Very happy with the content and progress so far. I’ll be in the US for two
weeks in Feb for work so I’m glad I have moved through some of the
content faster than the schedule. It will give me time to consolidate my
learning and not feel overly rushed when work commitments increase
periodically.I’ll come clean. I got a buzz out of looping code.
Next up, system components.
January 24, 2019 at 4:28 pm #109562JulianCohenParticipantHonestly if you got a buzz out of looping code you’re weird man! :side:
I got a buzz out of hoping to never look at it again, which does limit me a little but….
January 24, 2019 at 11:26 pm #109563MichaelRodwellMemberDont hate the coder, hate the loop!
I know what you’re saying though.Over the years I’ve intermittently had a go at figuring it out for myself
to no avail.Just for the record I got an equal buzz out of moving on!
January 25, 2019 at 6:40 am #109564ScottMcNabParticipantWe’re just jealous Mike..and its simpler to hate the coder than blame ourselves

January 28, 2019 at 9:04 am #109566MichaelRodwellMemberNow that the post looping code high has subsided I’m on to adding system components.
I’m seeing benefit in getting in front of AmiBroker as often as possible. Continual exposure, for short or long periods of time is helping things sink in.
On another note, I moved into my new place in Rosalie (Brisbane) and finally unpacked my book collection after having it in storage.
I’m looking forward to getting back into a few of them for some ideas and for a few of them some code snippets – Bandy’s stuff.
Speaking of Bandy – anyone care to make comment on his work?
I also dug out an old copy of Curtis Arnold’s PPS – anyone else other than Nick have that?
Could be a collectors item by now!
