Week #6 just finished. Up to Module #10 Lesson#4. Enjoying the journey. Will be on holidays with just my wife & I for 10 days at the end of the week (no kids!!), so will have some catch up when I get back. Appreciating the feedback from the forum on posts. Enjoying being long MSB in the ASX growth portfolio!
May 18, 2017 at 9:19 am #106525RobGilesMemberJust got back from 12 day break. Spent the day on revision. There’s a heck of a lot of stuff to remember here, feeling out my depth, but hopefully with a more concentrated effort over the next few months I can get something down.
Would be interested on how many systems graduates were able to successfully code when they went through the course?

Kind of like learning a language I am at the stage where I can understand most of what I hear in a conversation, but can’t speak very well.
However what I did was to make sure that by the time I had finished the course I had a number of the more complex templates (looping mainly) saved up so I could access them when I needed. Building systems from blocks of code that you have saved in the code snippets is a good way to progress.
The rest is relatively simple with continued use. Sorry there’s no magic pill, just lots of practice.
May 18, 2017 at 11:14 am #106896RobGilesMemberHi Julian
Thanks for the feedback. Have you found that if you’re missing a piece of code after you graduated, you were able to get it from fellow forum members?
cheers

RobAbsolutely. have a look back through some of my posts and also some of the others. We often ask for help with something and post the code we are using to have others look over it and offer advice. There’s some very bright guys here that are very happy to help.
May 25, 2017 at 12:40 pm #106897RobGilesMemberOK so I’m at the end of the section on looping….I feel like I’ve taken a bad trip.
I’m sure it will all make sense with some explanation & guidance.

May 25, 2017 at 11:55 pm #106973RobGilesMemberJune 11, 2017 at 5:15 am #106526RobGilesMemberI drank a cement milkshake, hardened up a bit and finished the coding section. Now at section #3. Been very helpful having Craig an email / skype call away to ensure understanding from the looping section onwards. I’m effectively at week #4 this Wednesday. Plan from here is to do a thorough revision of the coding notes that I have taken, ensure my code filing is all in the right place, have a skype hookup with Craig to bed down some areas that I still have questions over and start the systems part of the course.
June 24, 2017 at 10:11 am #106527RobGilesMemberFinished Section #3, now working on building my first system….which means that I have to remember how to code, which in turn reminds me of how far I’ve got to go in that space. So basically I’m doing a heap of coding revision.

Regarding coding it gets better with time and practice just create a cheat sheetJune 25, 2017 at 1:57 am #107140LeeDanelloParticipantRob Giles wrote:Finished Section #3, now working on building my first system….which means that I have to remember how to code, which in turn reminds me of how far I’ve got to go in that space. June 25, 2017 at 5:27 am #107141RobGilesMemberThanks Said.
At least trying to write my fist system has highlighted those areas I need a refresher on. I’ve booked in a session with Craig Monday to go through the basic system I’ve put together just to cement a few things in my mind. Unfortunately I’m one of those individuals that learns best by talking things through with a teacher. I’ve put together an action item list of those areas of coding that I need to focus on and I will be doing the revision on those areas this week.Am busily organising my AFL files so that I have all the various snippets of code ready to deploy when needed. Staying focused on getting the basics down pat can be a challenge for me because my mind never stops thinking about different trading strategies that I want to test out….e.g. Regression Line Crossovers outside a Bollinger Band Low as a MR system is one!!
June 25, 2017 at 5:54 am #107142LeeDanelloParticipantMake sure you can get a good understanding of in sample and out of sample testing. Don’t optimize on all your data. keep some of it for out of sample testing
June 25, 2017 at 10:15 am #107143RobGilesMemberWill do Maurice, thanks for the heads up. I found that chapter particularly interesting.
