OK I’m into week 3 of the course and I’m at Module 8, Lesson 3.
Can’t say I’m a natural at coding, the correct arrangement of code is not yet falling into place and I’m finding it a bit frustrating. Wish I was in a live tutorial so I could answers on the spot, but that’s just my impatience part getting fired up! Making the most of connecting with Craig…I’d be stuffed without the ability to be able to talk problems through with him. I can definitely see the potential power of Ami-broker, but am hoping that the “language” starts to become a little more intuitive soon. I’m also hoping that when I get to the stage that I describe to my mentors what system I’d like to trade that there will be some kind of template to follow in order to code it correctly.
Anyway, slightly overwhelming, but making progress!

regarding coding I think everyone has his own unique way of learning it but maybe typing the examples in the course will help to get familiar with the syntax and end of the day at least for me when i am working on new strategy 90% of my coding is just copy and paste from existing strategies or templates
April 4, 2017 at 11:36 pm #106567JulianCohenParticipantI agree with Said. It’s very difficult to teach you to code in six months but the course will get you to a stage where you have templates that you understand and can then cut and paste around that to get different systems. I do that all the time now when I’m working on a new system. As long as you understand what the code is doing it is easy to make new systems from the templates. The logic that is needed when writing new code from scratch is beyond me at the moment although I’d like to learn it
April 4, 2017 at 11:53 pm #106569LeeDanelloParticipantYep one of the beauties of this course are the code snippets that you won’t find anywhere else. So without this course, unless you are an elite coder, chances are you’ve probably introduced some sort of bias into your system. I’ve been using AMIBROKER since about 2004 and still haven’t got my head around a lot of the coding even though I strip, deconstruct and piece together a lot of stuff I find on the forums. I don’t think coding comes naturally to a lot of people. It’s a work in progress.
April 5, 2017 at 5:21 am #106568RobGilesMemberthanks for the support guys…appreciate it.
April 5, 2017 at 5:23 am #106570RobGilesMemberare the snippets available after the 6 months is up?
April 5, 2017 at 6:28 am #106572LeeDanelloParticipantYes but copy all the good stuff and save it into AMIBROKER otherwise you’ll lose track

April 6, 2017 at 11:58 am #106522AnonymousInactiveI turn out new systems almost weekly (most all shite) and that is just by using the templates created. Sometimes I think of something new and I have to think it through before sitting down and attempting it and it eventually comes right, other times it is a step too far and after a while it comes together.
Keep at it, it becomes easier with timeApril 7, 2017 at 12:10 am #106582LeeDanelloParticipantMaybe we should have a depositry where people could put their disused systems in. One man’s garbage could be another man’s treasure.

One man’s garbage could be another man’s treasure. That’s actually not a bad idea. For one thing it might not be the system that doesn’t work but the code is incorrect.
April 9, 2017 at 11:51 am #106584RobGilesMemberGreat idea….or it could be a positive expectancy system that one can’t trade simply because it doesn’t fit their beliefs, risk tolerance or psychology generally….but the next guy might gel with it
April 19, 2017 at 1:14 pm #106523RobGilesMemberNow in week #5, up to Module #9, after re-working the exercises with some help from Craig in Module #8. Starting to get the hang of it, in fact its quite addictive! I can’t help myself from jumping the gun as in my “spare time” I’m reading as many books as I can get my hands on about different systems. Still trying to work out what I actually want to trade. I know I need a) a long term capital investment system that can be applied to any stock market or ETFs (no doubt some kind of trend following approach, where returns will be compounded), and b) a shorter term, swing trading style with more aggressive objectives to be traded with a smaller amount of capital (income generation). Anyway, maybe you guys might be able to help me brainstorm on that front when I get to that part of the course. All I know at this stage is the simpler, the better.
Oh yeah, I’ve also documented my beliefs about trading and markets, what these beliefs get me into and what they get me out of and whether or not they’re useful. Quite a useful exercise to get an appreciation of what I think will work for me down the track.
April 19, 2017 at 5:41 pm #106659SaidBitarMemberAs you said simpler is better
regarding books there are many out there few that are good but regarding long term systems you just need to keep it simple.
logical entry such as x days high and good trade management and position sizing then you will have profitable system.I tested once with random entry and good trade management (I am crazy about Nick’s adaptive % trail stop) and % wise position sizing the end result was successful.
so regarding long term keep it as simple as possible, short term is another style but try to keep it simpler.
