Are there any computer genuises that can recommend a decent laptop please ?
I hook my laptop up to a 34″ wide screen. Usually just run AB, RT, chrome with multiple tabs open and excel.
My current laptop is a Microsoft Laptop 4, 32GB of ram/memory, 1TB of hard drive. Its only 15 months old, but keeps randomly shutting down when doing simple things like excel.
When it does run, the memory is 50% or over in use and the mouse slows down.Manufacturer recommended rebooting and a bunch of other stuff, but the problem keeps reoccuring.
March 5, 2023 at 2:35 am #115468GlenPeakeParticipantFWIW, I use a MSI laptop.
https://www.wireless1.com.au/msi-prestige-14-a10ras-096au-14in-i7-10710u-mx330-16gb-512gb-ssd-laptopI’ve had it for about 14months…. all good.
Whatever you get, providing it’s one of the better known names/brands and reasonably priced, should be fine…..
One thing to make sure of is SSD hard drive….. you mentioned 1TB hard drive in your post, but I’m not sure if this is SSD or HDD….. so whatever you get in the future, ensure it’s SSD….. AB / RealTest will perform MUCH faster on SSD.
Looks like you’re considering a laptop with at least 64gig ram (mentioned in your journal post)….. nice!!!!
March 5, 2023 at 8:00 am #115473KateMoloneyParticipantThanks Glen, yes it is SSD.
I don’t care so much for ram etc … just as long as the thing stays alive.
I figured since my laptop is constantly working hard using lots of ram/memory it might be wise to upgrade to 64GB of ram.
Dell seem to have a few good options …
March 5, 2023 at 9:44 am #115469SaidBitarMemberI use DELL workstations (PRECISION) for a long time, they are excellent but a bit bulky. They have the XPS line that looks better and is a bit smaller. As mentioned SSD is very important regarding the RAM it is useful because it can determine the amount of data that can be carried in memory especially if you want to test 10 strategies in Realtest and go back to early 2000 or 1995. Their service is perfect they have the option they will come to your place to repair it.
Regarding other brands, I think all are good as long as the SSD and the RAMs are goodMarch 5, 2023 at 2:55 pm #115470LEONARDZIRParticipantI use Falcon trading computers. Very reliable and excellent Tech support although I rarely have needed Tech support.
March 5, 2023 at 9:29 pm #115482Nick RadgeKeymasterI use a Dell XPS 13 with SSD
March 5, 2023 at 11:06 pm #115479TrentRothallParticipantI have a DELL Vostro. It works well but the fan is bloody loud and goes almost all the time. I would get a XPS next time. I went the cheaper option
March 5, 2023 at 11:30 pm #115484KateMoloneyParticipantThanks for all the suggestions guys.
Nick, I’ve been looking at the Dell XPS range.
What size ram/memory did you get ?
March 5, 2023 at 11:40 pm #115485Nick RadgeKeymasterProcessor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1195G7 @ 2.90GHz 2.92 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.7 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Touch support with 10 touch points
March 6, 2023 at 1:37 am #115483RobertMontgomeryParticipantI have been running a Lenovo laptop for about a year and it was a big upgrade in speed over my old desktop. 14″ is very slim and easy to travel with, I find the build quality more robust than the Dell’s I bought for my college students, but I may have gone too cheap on their’s. They have no complaints about the Dell’s.
Lenovo
Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) i5 1.30 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB
474 GB SSD
64-bit operating systemMarch 6, 2023 at 4:21 am #115471JulianCohenParticipantOne thing to bear in mind is that RealTest runs all it’s data processes in RAM, so if you are testing a portfolio with more than four or five strategies over a longer period of time, you will find the RAM starts to suffer.
I’d go for 32GB to future proof yourself
March 6, 2023 at 7:42 am #115472KateMoloneyParticipantThanks guys.
Did some research and Dell XPS looks good
XPS 13, 15 and 17 have the best reviews for performance and battery life.
Avoid XPS 13 plus. It has great performance but battery only lasts 4 hours and it gets very hot.
March 6, 2023 at 11:12 pm #115487TrentRothallParticipantNick do you run your 2 extra screens off your laptop? No issues if so?
March 7, 2023 at 12:06 am #115492Nick RadgeKeymasterYes. No issues.
Just ensure the HDMI adaptor is good quality – cheap ones get too hot and cause conflict. I now use an Alogic mini docking station with dual HDMI inputs which I got from Harvey NormanMarch 14, 2023 at 11:28 pm #115493KateMoloneyParticipantGot the Dell XPS 15″ yesterday.
64GB of ram 1TB SSD drive. Upgraded the HDMI adapter between laptop and big screen.
Might have been overkill on the ram, but so far wondering how I lived BD (before Dell)
