Laptop for backtesting

Does anyone have a recommendation for laptop specs for back testing.

I’m currently using my work computer and need to separate my trading.

Amibroker support wasnt much help as they just gave me the min specs required.

Looking for the sweet spot of price and performance.

I also use Dell they are decent and the nice thing is that if you have any problems they come home to fix it.

what is important in whatever laptop you want is SSD and RAMS so that the Monte carlo simulations will run fast

Michael,
I use computers from Falcon trading computers here in the US. Very knowledgeable staff and they will help you get the right specs for a trading computer. Also very reliable computers and the support is terrific. Price is reasonable.

Yes ensure it has a SSD as said mentioned will save hours

I use Dell XPS to and Dell inspiron (back up).What really make the difference its the RAM size (min. 16GB) but my XPS use 32GB RAM.Day to day operation or monthly rotation system i believe 16GB enough if You really just using the laptop for trading.
If You using the laptop backtesting, downloding norgate data and amibroker and any other applications, and You do not want to wait to long because the different application slowing down the system i higly recommend 32GB RAM (RAM price by the way reserve your laptop value).We are living the cloud computing and crypto currency age.

Hi everyone,

Because I’m not very tech, I hope you don’t mind if I ask a potentially dumb question or two…

If I’m using a $1,000 laptop (which is what I have right now) versus something with 32GB and SSD, how long are we talking about in terms of time difference to run a monte carlo simulation? I know that this will vary but I’m hoping to get some indication of what I’d be paying for.

Should I set up my current laptop as my back up?

Terry what sort of RAM do you have in your laptop. The SSD will make a difference of course, but RAM is the main thing that can affect the performance at this time.

At a guess, I’d say some of the walk forward analysis you might have to leave running overnight…

I don’t even know what RAM I have…I did say I was not tech savvy .

Running with say 16GB, how long would the overnight analysis take do you think? I guess I’m trying to decide whether I need to invest another $2k on electronic devices…

There’s too many variables to work that out I’m afraid. If you run on Nasdaq 100 then the analysis will be quick. The Russell 3000 slows things down considerably. The time frame you are testing over makes a difference too.

My suggestion would be to start and see how you go. If/when you get too frustrated with it, then upgrade.

Hi Terry,
Blind leading the blind here but if you (assuming windows) go into control panel and click on “System” it will show installed memory (ram)
