Funny that…No fun being in the spotlight like that I’m sure. Who’d want to be a CTA or a professional manager?
May 11, 2022 at 2:28 am #114749TrentRothallParticipantI wonder if these big ETFs have an impact on the overall market? From what I understand is that when people are buying or selling the underlying ETF, then that fund has to go out and purchase/sell a proportionate amount of positions in the underlying assets it holds. The turnover on last night’s bar was 2.5 billion so I think that the fund would have to go out and do that amount of transactions on the underlying assets. So if consumers are dumping the ETF hard, I am guessing that the fund is selling the same amount of the assets it holds which would pressure on those prices you would think… I don’t know as Julian said who would want to be in the business
May 13, 2022 at 10:26 am #114750KateMoloneyParticipantTonight I am in hospital after the second emergency surgery on my ear this year. After 3 surgeries in 2 years, and 4th ear infection of the year ….
I’m good for now and the hospital & staff are awesome (we are soooo lucky in Australia).
But here’s the cool part of the story.
A few weeks/months ago I looked at single points of failure in our trading business. One of my solutions was to set up a “tech pack” with mouse, power plugs, batteries and I have a spare small laptop that has AB etc on it.
This morning I had 15 minutes notice that I needed to present to emergency for this surgery. So I grabbed a backpack, my tech pack and the spare laptop, and left home. It was super easy and I didn’t need to think or stress whether I had everything I needed (or not).
Whilst waiting around in hospital, I was able to run my daily P & L, daily backtest and exploration/load trades for tonight.
No business interruption. I could have gotten family to do it for me, but I love what I do … and its given me something inspiring to work on in hospital
Moral of the story: take your trading business seriously. Yes, the markets have not been kind to the P& L lately, but during this period I have invested more hours than ever to improve and refine my trading.
Its not just about HOW or WHAT system you trade, its about the structures, the admin, tax planning, rules, backups, mindset …
I’ve also been thinking about what happens when I made X profit, where/how will I structure funds? Planning in advance instead of reacting emotionally to events as they happen …
PS – I’m a big believer in mindset. It has been fascinating to listen to other patients in the hospital play the victim with whatever family drama / illness they may have.
Having gratitude speeds up the healing process. Being accountable and not playing the blame game makes the nursing staff here want to help you more.
I’m sure the same applies for Nick and Craig. The more we help ourselves, the more they want to help us excel and achieve our trading goals

Firstly, sorry to hear about your health issues. I’m hoping you have a speedy recovery. Do you know how long you’re likely to be in hospital?
Now, about the business of trading…nice work.
All the best,
Terry
May 13, 2022 at 1:35 pm #113442BenOsbornParticipantLove it Kate!
I also have a laptop set up with everything to go in case I need it.
I too enjoy the process of it all. From trading to research to planning out what will happen when you reach x, y and z.
Yeah the drawdown sucks right now but at the same time I’m not bothered. I have no problem loading up each night. I have undertaken a lot of testing and also understand where and why I might see some deviation. I feel much more comfortable than drawdowns in discretionary trading in the past.
Get well soon!

May 14, 2022 at 12:42 am #114766KateMoloneyParticipantHey Terry,
I should be out today. I’ll be having my third (and hopefully final) corrective surgery on May 30.
It is annoying, but I’m grateful to be close to some awesome health care.Had a few good chats about the stock market and how their buy and hold portfolios are getting hammered. Its a good reminder how lucky we are to have exit strategies pre planned in trading !
May 14, 2022 at 3:37 am #114768TerryDunneParticipantThat’s good news Kate, I hope your recovery continues to go well.

Completed a revision of the new ranking system. Performance is very similar to the previous system, difference is the results don’t produce large quantities of shares with the same rank number on exploration.
Craig taught me to look at charts with indicators and think of ideas (for trading systems or otherwise). It took me about an hour of thinking and playing to come up with a different variation of the rank that produced similar results. You can get quite creative.
The last 4 – 6 weeks has been harder than usual to develop systems. I guess 18 months of continued ear infections, surgeries and antibiotics is starting to wear me down. For example, I easily forget things (like what day of the week it is). All my energy is invested into trading and outside of that … I’ve consciously let a few things go (eg cleaning the house). Its all about priorities at the moment, and outside of my health, achieving my trading goals is a priority.
The more I work on the trading systems, the less I worry about the current results / drawdowns … whatever. Trading everyday has become a habit, just like brushing my teeth. When the profits come again, I will feel like I’ve earnt them for sure !
Heading to the Sunshine Coast for a mini break this weekend.
Next week will get back to revamping my first day trade system.
Happy trading everyone
May 20, 2022 at 3:08 am #114779TerryDunneParticipantHave a nice break Kate, it sounds like you need it and you’ve earned it!
May 25, 2022 at 12:45 am #113444KateMoloneyParticipantUpdate:
Weekend getaway postponed due to rain and an unexpected post surgery complication.
Worked over the weekend to get the first day trade strategy launched … this has been done now.
Reviewed brokerage costs since launching higher price minimum for day trade. Costs are down average 15% – 20% per trade.
Reviewed overall P & L for 6x trading systems (started at end of 2020 and added systems every 6 months). Overall, am making a small loss on all systems combined (4x Chartist systems, 2x Day trade systems). It seems its just bad timing and the systems are still healthy and robust.
Created a spreadsheet to work out when/if I need to rebalance portfolios, especially in relation to the portfolios that use margin. So far I’ve had 3 trading days where my equity has fallen below 10% and orders have been frozen by IB. Aim is to avoid (where possible) this happening in the future so I can get as close to the backtest as possible.
Next, will be working on my trading plan and setting some more goals. I’ve achieved most of my trading goals this year. I have very loose financial trading goals, as I can’t control the market, but I do set lots of “doing goals” … eg create new system, research X module on mentor course, review trading system performance
Finally, the final (fingers x) surgery is booked for Monday. I pay to go private, as the wait is only 5 weeks vs 3 years public (and getting a crippling ear infection every 4-6 weeks). The cost increase since my Nov ’21 surgery is 90% … and its pretty much the same procedure. Inflation is
Think its time for the market gods to be kind and let us earn some money yeah ? Who is with me on giving an offering to the trading gods ? What is the process?
Do we throw someone into a volcano and pray? Who wants to volunteer? Julian ?? Nick ???May 25, 2022 at 3:30 am #114784JulianCohenParticipantI suggest Nick as he is our revered leader…the Gods will appreciate our sacrifice more if we throw him in
May 25, 2022 at 3:34 am #114787Nick RadgeKeymasterThanks for allowing me to take the fall.
