Hey traders! Thought I’d better introduce myself real quick as I just joined a month ago or so and I’m getting pretty deep into the course material now.
My name is Matt, I’m a 31 year old retail trader living in Queensland Australia (about a 1.5 hour drive from Noosa and TheChartist HQ)
I started trading a few years ago back around 2017, made every mistake in the book, blew a few accounts in the forex markets, found a really good trading mentor to teach me the ropes properly, and then while learning how to backtest and trade rules-based forex strategies using technical analysis and proper risk management and edge etc I got extremely lucky with my timing in some crypto ‘investments’. I called them investments at the time but really I had no idea what I was doing.
But now I’ve gone from a broke university student to managing around half a million of my own capital across various markets, and I’ve spent the past 4 years or so rigorously studying and learning everything I can about profitable trading and investing and have had some reasonable success with rules-based trading over the past couple of years.
I’ve also been a hobby programmer for over 15 years and so I’ve dabbled with automation and semi-automation in my trading through a few different languages including TradingView’s Pine Script + 3rd party APIs, Java, MQL and Python.
I initially aspired to be a discretionary click-trader, with fifteen screens in my office covered in colourful indicators and scalping fast profits left and right all day and night lol, but my experiences in the markets so far have shown me that my strength definitely lies in simple systematic/rules-based strategies and trading longer timeframes. And since I know how to code I figure I might as well leverage that powerful tool to its maximum potential.
But I quickly realised when I started coding automated trading scripts that just like in manual discretionary/rules-based trading, I need good mentorship and guidance from people far more experienced than me in order to succeed at this style of trading – which is why I’m here.
I’ve been a long-time fan of Nick’s work and trading philosophy from the very beginning of my trading journey, so I’m really excited to finally be here learning system development from the man himself! I’m also excited to be learning the ropes of AFL & system coding through Craig who is obviously very experienced with this language. It’s been a wild ride to get here but I’m very grateful that I made it and I’m enjoying every minute of the learning journey and challenges along the way.
I recognize how lucky I got with my crypto profits and so I’m determined to make sure I earn the right to keep trading and growing my capital over the decades to come by truly mastering my psychology and the best trading and investment practices.
Really really excited to be here, loving the course so far and I can’t wait to learn from everyone else here and see what stories and ideas and resources you guys have to share. Also looking forward to sharing my own experiences and helping people out once I become confident in my own abilities with AFL & system development.
