Hey All
I’m Mark.
Born and bred in Melbourne, but spent the last decade or so living in the Philippines and travelling between the UK, US and AU building a startup.
Interestingly this is one of the first forums I’ve posted in for nearly 20 years. I was a member of Nick’s old Reefcap forum in the early 2000’s and posted regularly there.
Back then I was in my late 20s with enough energy to follow the Aussie market then sit up for a good chunk of the US session too. And I enjoyed every minute of it!
I’m now in my late 40s and can’t seem to be bothered sitting up past 9pm, let alone looking at charts for too long, so short term discretionary trading probably isn’t the best career choice going forward. I didn’t trade the last 20 years – I traded from around 2000-2002ish and then went off and got qualified as an accountant and built my business.
I’m about a month into the mentor program. I got to Module 7 fairly painlessly and then got smacked in the head trying to understand and produce the coding. It feels like learning a foreign language where I roughly understand the conversation around me, but can’t translate exactly what is being said word for word.
I think running a company for about 10 years has impaired my ability to dive deep into the weeds. My usual day to day is high level problem solving and handballing…err…delegating…technical tasks to smarter people than me.
I did the RSI and ATR tasks this morning. Didn’t quite get them right, but wasn’t too far off. The Guppy task is doing my head in, so I’ve booked a call with Craig. I’ve managed to produce the moving averages on a chart, but my parameter box is a disaster
I had a cracked version of Tradestation back in the day and did some very basic coding in that. I didn’t produce the code, but rather, maniupulated other peoples’ (Nick’s!) code that I found on the forum. Some of my reading here suggests others have had similar challenges learning Amibroker, and lean on the templates later in the mentor course.
I’d like to think I have a decent understanding of systems and that part of the course will be far easier for me. And of course, the coding is very early days for me and I’m sure with practice it will get easier.
Mark
