Nov 2019
ASX
ASX growth: -1.03%US
MOC: -5.23%
MR: +0.21%
SPX Mom: 4.27%
NDX Mom: 0.55%Account: -0.99%
My MOC system running on R3000 was hit by I (Intersat) dropping from 23 USD to 8 within 3 days. Nicely following its way south…
January 5, 2020 at 10:58 am #110625DanielBaeumlerMemberASX growth: – 1.53%
US MOC: + 3.07%
US MR: switched-off
US NDX Mom: +3.94%
US SPX Mom: + 3.60%
My account was up 1.05% in December. For the year 2019, I was down – 1.4%. Disappointing. I made some operational mistakes and currency was also against me. Nevertheless, I wonder if my systems are really competitive. My current thoughts:
[ul]
[li][/li]
[li][/li]
[/ul]are my systems too simple not really delivering an edge (anymore)?
[ul]
[li]have market conditions and trading behaviour changed over the last few years that backtest results from the past 10 or 20 years are not really meaningful anymore?[/li]
[li][/li]
[/ul]I.e. if a I take my US Swing system running on NDX. 3 simple criteria, no curve fitting. I launched the system mid 2018.
After it went live it looks almost as if somebody would have pulled a plug. For now, I will switch-off my NDX swing system, stick to my MOC system, one of my momentum systems and the ASX growth portfolio (from Nick). I also plan to run an ETF based system (I like the monthly Meb Faber approach).

January 6, 2020 at 12:07 am #110745MichaelRodwellMemberHey Daniel,
Thanks for sharing the results. A couple of question if I may?
– How did the system perform 1995 – 2005?
– Before you started trading the system would a 2-3% loss for a year been enough for you to turn it off?Nick: have you experienced anything like this with the HFT? I remember a few years ago when I traded it one of the strengths was the consistency of profitable months and years.
January 6, 2020 at 3:53 am #107638ScottMcNabParticipantHi Daniel,
Could try running it on unseen data (SPX back to 1960 or asx 1992-present) ….if ok on unseen data then it will give u confidence it was just a bad year…Just out of interest..noticed average hold almost 8 days…..what is ave bars in winning trade ? Does adding an “n” bar exit help system at all?
January 6, 2020 at 11:14 am #110747DanielBaeumlerMemberThanks for your feedback, Michael.
2-3% loss by itself would be no reason for me to switch a system off. And of-course: This is the typical beginner mistake to run away from a system if it doesn’t deliver the expected results at the first place.
The reason for my doubts with this particular system is related to the fact how extreme the performance was going down, and: Somebody recently posted an article here in the forum that professional system trader running swing systems on SPX and NDX increased significantly over the last couple of years which would be one reason why it became harder to make a profit in these markets.
So, given the limited capacity I have for further developing my systems (I have a pretty demanding full-time job), I thought it’s better to pause the system for now.
Performance from 1995-2005 was even better delivering CAGR of 58% with 71% winners.
January 6, 2020 at 11:21 am #110748DanielBaeumlerMemberThanks, Scott.
What do you mean with using ‘unseen’ data? The avg winning bar is 6.3 days. I have an n-exit after 15 days.
January 6, 2020 at 1:52 pm #110749LEONARDZIRParticipantDaniel,
You have raised an extremely important question. How do you know your system is broken? I am trading an equity curve of my stems but that really isn’t an answer. Would love to see a discussion of the topic and particularly get Nick’s thoughts.January 6, 2020 at 1:53 pm #110751LEONARDZIRParticipantequity curve of my systems.
January 6, 2020 at 3:26 pm #110752DanielBaeumlerMemberexactly Len. Cheers.
I can’t see your equity curve. Missed the upload?January 6, 2020 at 5:18 pm #110753LEONARDZIRParticipantDaniel,
Didn’t post the equity curve just correcting the post.January 7, 2020 at 1:24 am #110750ScottMcNabParticipantDaniel Baeumler wrote:Thanks, Scott.
What do you mean with using ‘unseen’ data? Not sure if u have run the system on asx (or spx before 1990)? If not then this would be unseen data…I am thinking about eliminating any potential concern regarding curve fitting as the cause of the sudden drop.
February 1, 2020 at 4:19 pm #110754DanielBaeumlerMemberJan 2020
ASX growth: + 4.7%
NDX Momentum: – 3.4%

February 1, 2020 at 11:23 pm #110876AnonymousInactiveYes! Brilliant MOC result considering your recent woes with the system! Maybe it is making a comeback?
