Accountant/advisor for all things tax, trust etc

Hi all,

I am really struggling to find a good accountant/advisor in South East Qld that can listen to my ramblings and help me lay out a good strategy for ongoing operation of my trading ‘business’. Also help me with ongoing accounting, tax filing etc upon my move back to Australia in the coming months. I’m currently using someone in Singapore and HK but they are only really good enough for annual, personal income tax return prep and filing. Anything that starts to become too exotic for them is outside their scope.

I’m talking looking at trust setup, companies acting as trustee, beneficiary etc. How best to stream profits to beneficiaries, minimise risk, tax, how to balance contributions to superannuation etc. Add to the mix the fact that I want to invest in US based securities and don’t have much interest in ASX.

Because I’ve been outside Australia over ten years I am finding it really hard to find a good operator and the ones I’ve already approached aren’t really floating my boat.

Any advice from the forum on where/how to look, find and hunt one down would be of great help! Of course, if you have a link to a “go to person” I’d love to hear it too.

Matt, I have had the same problem here in the United States. I have went through several accountants, some good others bad. I eventually learned that I really need a wealth strategist. These guys at least from what I have found, typically deal with people who make large amounts of money from deals or trading and can typically point you in the right direction. Accountants really aren’t trained to provide you with the best tax strategies, at least in my experience. Hope that helps a little.

Hi everyone,

I’m coming to the tentative conclusion that a local tax firm is good enough to manage my tax affairs, but they don’t really need to know anything about trading…I have my P&L, translated into AUD, so it could be profit on widget sales at the local market for all they care.

I figure I need to have someone who can provide tax planning advice before year end, but apart from that there isn’t too much to do.

I trade through a shelf company – no trust, no smsf.

I’d appreciate any thoughts on this, especially if you think I’m wrong!
