Hi everyone,
I wanted to reach out to get some suggestions from what others are doing to track their short trading systems. In Share Trade Tracker, I am unable to upload my short trades with the same IB bulk uploading procedure. The issue is that it won’t upload a sell order without having a matching long position open. Of course there is the manual uploading procedure but this is really quite slow and manual.
For MOC systems there is no issue but for any multi-day short trading strategies its really cumbersome. I would love to hear if others have found a way to streamline this.
I remember that Said was developing Portfolio in Depth, Said is this functioning well for multiday short systems?
Thanks in advance,
Dustin

November 21, 2020 at 7:50 pm #112503AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. Nick, when I do what you are suggesting, I get the message that the trades were not uploaded because they don’t have a matching buy trade.
Attached is an example of the message.
Also, to clarify, for the trade confirmation file that is exported by TWS, I manually changed the “Action” column from “SLD” to “SHORT.”
I would be interested to know how you are getting that to work without an existing long position or matching buy order. For a MOC short system, it isn’t a problem becuase the long and short positions are logged on the same day but I am struggling with multiday short systems.
Thanks again!

December 22, 2020 at 7:54 pm #112508AnonymousInactiveI’m not shorting yet but what is the issue here? Do some column values to be changed to different names? See my other thread – I will add this to the STT Merge app.

The TWS trade log doesn’t specify if a trade was short or long – it just says BOT or SOLD. So when you use the automatic IB uploader built into the STT, it assumes that all trades are bought long and sold. The other issue is in the trade consolidation – this works very well for long trades using the IB uploader directly in STT. However, for short trades, there is no consolidation tool within STT. Nick and Said have provided a separate consolidation tool that you can use to paste into the trade upload sheet in STT.
In theory it seems that it could be possible to have an automatic IB uploader in STT for both long and short trades but I think it would require that strategies are either long or short but not both within STT – and it would require that the user define what each system is so that STT knows how to interpret the BOT and SOLD identifiers. Anyway, this is surely not easy to add or change within STT.

At the time I thought it was a strange response considering it was his product after all but it is clear now why he was not interested in pursuing it further.

My initial hunch is:
Combine duplicates first so that everything is already consolidated,
then,
if the SOLD on a symbol timestamp is before the BOT, change the actions to SHORT and COVER.I’ll tinker with this after the new year. Thanks for the info!
