I’m curently using a desktop and have shied away from using a laptop over the years because of the cost and performance issues, but it now seems that they’re theway to go. As my desktop has now become obsolete, I’m now in the market for a new Windows OS laptop computer, but if you’re not a computer geek the choices seem boundless. What seems to be the consensus here regarding the specs for a new laptop. Just the basics like RAM, CPU type, screen size, hard disks SSD or conventional hard drive. I was thinking of spending about 2k for a laptop which would have an i7 core 16 Gig of ram, quadcore CPU, about 15in screen, 250gig SSD, 64bit. Other than that, I’m not sure what a good set up would be. Not looking at doing any gaming, just use it for spreadsheets, Amibroker, normal internet usage.

I use Dell work station m2800 for trading and programming (i7, 4 cores 8 threads 16gb ram and ssd) just for one reason that it is powerful. The thing is that you need the power of processors and rams only in Monte Carlo simulations. I was using ultra book before 2 cores 4 threads and 6gb ram and ssd it was ok but Mcs took time sometimes more than 24 hours.

Desktop in my opinion is much better than laptops due to the possibility of cutomization if you have no problem with mobility than it is better

Again remember what you need is mainly processors and ram and only for mcs the laptop that you described is very good

So may be you don’t need to change

you may also want to consider ports for connecting other screens. im running an msi apache GE62 which is a gaming laptop but i dont do any gaming. i got it mainly for the mini DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI ports that it comes with so i can run 2 other large screens. the SSD drive was also a consideration for quicker backtesting.

I have used laptops for 15-years without issue. All have been Dell and Trish and I recently upgraded to the latest Dell XPS13.

A key reason we chose Dell is next day on-site support. Living in a regional area we don’t want to be left high and dry. Dell ALWAYS send someone the next day regardless of the issue.
